Free Agents

It's realistic that the Pirates could go out & spend $20M on FA's this year {They won't do it} but, It could get 3 top line players. Let's have a vote what 3 legit FA's would you want to see signed & for how much each? Remember $20M.

"SPENDING" in free agency does not guarantee performance. The Pirates have experienced this many times. It is all about spending wisely to ensure you get a valuable return for the dollar spent.

I haven't watched that one yet, but I saw the a special on Real Sports years ago about that game.

Have you seen the clip of the Braves broadcasters raving about McCutchen's speed, showing him side by side with neon deion? Search it on youtube!

Have any of my fellow Pirate fans seen this clip?

A Funky Ride Through Baseball In The 1970s Dock Ellis, the man on the mound for the Bucs on 9/1/71, when they became the first MLB team to field an all-black and -latino starting lineup. The other Pirates taking the field were Rennie Stennett (2B), Gene Clines (CF), Roberto Clemente (RF), Willie Stargell (LF), Manny Sanguillen (C), Dave Cash (3b), Al Oliver (1b) and Jackie Hernandez (SS). The Pirates beat the Phillies that night, 10-7.

Why? Kendall's play fell far short of the amount of money he was paid. The Pirates had to pay Oakland to take him off their hands. He was a terrible value regardless of how long he stayed in MLB.

The Pirates would have been better off in the long run if the team did not have a first round selection that year. However, the karma might be completely different. Thus, the Pirates might not be in the driver's seat for Rendon.

I didn't use Kendall as an random example. He and Peterson were the first-rounders when Simmons was with the organization.

my point about kendell piratesreport is you used the wrong guy for your example, there are dozens of 1st rounders the pirates picked that have failed, kendell isn't one of them.

And Charles Peterson had a career that most first-round picks have nightmares about. Let's see how Alvarez, Sanchez and Taillon pan out in the next few years.

Kendell has had a career most players dream of having.

no question about the #1's but what makes a draft are the gems found in the later rounds like a Santos or a Curry in this years draft.

agreed

You're right, but the No. 1's set the tone. They have to be triples and home runs, not bunt singles.

PR: It is not just the first round selections. The draft signings and international development will be stronger from top to bottom.

Now we'll see if Alvarez, Sanchez and Taillon will turn out better than Kendall and Peterson, the first-rounders when Simmons was with the organization. I like their chances right now.

in the mid 2000's the farm system was rated in the top 15 by the 'experts'.this 'plan' that huntington is going by is the same plan that ted simmons went by.the speeches that are given are the same ones that were given in the late 1990's.

Lancem: Law was on the radio with Stan and I forget the other one. But he glowed about the Pirates and how much they've done. When asked what bad he could say about them. He said nothing.

Polatta: Don't you think it is better business to spend for the return you will get in the future vs. what was brought in the past?

The big payroll markets would not have a big payroll without having the ability to play the small market teams who were in MLB for over 100 years. These small markets need protection and if they go down, the big ones will soon follow.
